Builders win award for college campus

Commercial regional builder of the year: Hansen Yuncken was recognised for the construction of the new Greater Shepparton Secondary College campus.

The construction of Greater Shepparton Secondary College’s new campus has earned Victorian building company Hansen Yuncken the title of North East Commercial Regional Builder of the Year by Master Builders Victoria.

Opening to students at the beginning of the year, the campus consists of three main buildings known as ‘neighbourhoods’, a separate building to speciality subjects, and the refurbished heritage-listed Shepparton High School main building.

The campus accommodates almost 3000 students from four original public high schools in the area, and about 300 staff.

Hansen Yuncken senior project manager Tom Cumming said the award acknowledged the team’s efforts on the project.

“You never expect these things, but it’s a nice recognition,” he said.

“It’s a reflection of what the team was able to achieve in a difficult time.”

Mr Cumming said the COVID-19 pandemic made the build challenging, and the team was constantly adapting to different restrictions and solving unprecedented issues.

“It’s a great recognition of the team’s effort,” he said.

Master Builders Victoria chief executive Rebecca Casson said Hansen Yuncken had excelled.

“The new Greater Shepparton Secondary College involved demolishing the existing Shepparton High School and constructing a new government secondary school to support 2700 students,” she said.

She said the addition of upgrading the old Shepparton High School building added to the build’s significance.

State-of-the-art: Greater Shepparton Secondary College’s gym.
Impressive: Hansen Yuncken senior project manager Tom Cumming said the title was recognition of the hard work by the team to finish the campus.

“This incorporated a two-level strip and fit-out to provide a health and wellbeing centre and additional staff workstations,” she said.

“The new gymnasium comprises two Netball Australia compliant courts, learning spaces, dedicated weights and movement room, change/toilets and storage.”

Hansen Yuncken was also awarded the Excellence in Construction of Commercial Buildings over $6 million for the project.

It’s not the first time the company has taken home the title of regional commercial builder of the year.

It won the award in 2018 for the Bendigo Kangan Institute and again in 2019 for constructing Shepparton Villages at Malculata Place.

The North East Master Builders Victoria Regional Building Awards took place in Albury on Friday, July 8.
