Cobram Anglican Grammar School students participated in a special “walk safely to school” day on Friday, May 20.
Foundation students were accompanied by Year 12 students, teachers and Cobram Highway Patrol officers on the walk along Campbell Rd.
National Walk Safely to School Day, held during National Road Safety Week, is an event where primary students are encouraged to walk or safely to school.
The initiative is designed to encourage younger children to be active, while learning about essential road safety skills.
It also promotes environmental aspects such as encouraging children to use public transport to get to school and how walking helps reduce noise pollution, air pollution and traffic congestion.
CAGS head of junior school Mary Swoffer said the event was a great opportunity for the younger students to learn early on about road safety.
“(It’s) a community event that embraces a strong social message of being active, promoting good health, road safety and a sense of belonging,” she said.
Mrs Swoffer said the event was also a good way to bring the older and younger students together.
“We nurture and embrace these unique opportunities to bring the older and younger students together for a community event.”
Foundation students Grace Kelly and Sophia Trengrove said they both enjoyed the special walk with the Year 12 students and learning about road safety.
“I liked walking with them (the Year 12s) because I haven’t been with them before,” Grace said.
Year 12 student Grace Damore said she also enjoyed the time with the younger students and thought it was important for them.
“It gets them to interact with the other older students, and it makes us more like role models as well,” she said.
