In a step towards recognising the Rose City’s First Nations cultural heritage, Benalla Rural City Council is inviting local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists to submit an expression of interest to create a unique artwork.

It is hoping for a piece of art that reflects the local people, communities and/or landscapes of Benalla Rural City and celebrates the culture of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

The selected artwork(s) will feature in the council’s first Reflect Reconciliation Action Plan 2024-2026 and will be showcased at various council venues and community celebrations.

Interested artists living on Yorta Yorta or Taungurung Country are invited to submit their interest, including a letter outlining the artist’s connection to Country, a CV, and a portfolio showcasing their artistic practice, by close of business on Friday, March 1.

Shortlisted artists will be invited to submit a concept design. A panel comprising members of Benalla’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community and council representatives will select the final artwork(s).

With its first Reconciliation Action Plan, the council will join several other local organisations, such as Benalla Health, Thales and neighbouring local government areas, in undertaking an important step towards reconciliation.
