There was a moment when Shane Warne, Tom Rockliff and Ash Barty picked up a bat, ball and racquet for the first time.
Giving something new a try could lead a young person anywhere in the world - the sky’s the limit.
Perhaps Australia’s next sporting megastar is sat in a Benalla home right now, unaware that on Sunday, September 10 they will try something they end up loving, for the very first time.
That is the date that Tomorrow Today is planning its next come and try day.
But it’s not all about sports. A great hobby could set a youngster up with a passion and friendship circle that lasts a lifetime.
Tomorrow Today’s Come and Try Day has become a fixture on the Benalla calendar since its inception in 2017, and expressions of interest for clubs, groups and associations to participate are now open.
Tomorrow Today’s Youth Engagement Coordinator, Alex Ross, said the foundation is aware that recruiting new members to sign up is often a challenge for volunteer-based sport and hobby clubs.
“That’s why the Come and Try Day is such a great opportunity for them,” Ms Ross said.
“Just about everything is done. The advertising and venue are organised and there is no cost to anyone.
“All you need to do is come along and share what you do in an engaging and active way.
“We would normally see around 20 clubs participating and between 150 and 200 people attending.”
Ms Ross said the Come and Try Day is a chance for local clubs to capture the next generation of members as well as volunteers.
“It’s a perfect way for them to support the longevity of their club, or association, and share the passion and enthusiasm they have with new people,” she said.
Previous attendees include Auskick, Benalla Netball Club, Astronomy Benalla, North Eastern Archers, Benalla Guides, Benalla Scouts, Gibbs Taekwondo, Benalla Hockey, Little Athletics, Benalla Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club, Room at the Table and Benalla Art Gallery to name just a few.
Come and Try Day will be held on Sunday, September 10 from 10am to 1pm at Benalla Indoor Recreation Centre and All Blacks Reserve.
