The driver of a truck involved in a fatal crash at Carag Carag faced court for the first time on Wednesday, May 31.

Clement Thomas Cheri , 24, of Jan Juc, is charged with dangerous driving causing death.

The charge comes after a crash between a truck driven by Mr Cheri and a car on the Midland Hwy at Carag Carag, near Stanhope, on Friday, May 26.

A Shepparton woman, 73, who was a passenger in the car, died in hospital.

The car’s driver, a Shepparton woman, 32, sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to hospital for treatment.

Mr Cheri appeared briefly in Bendigo Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday for a filing hearing.

He has not entered any pleas to the charge.

In Wednesday’s court appearance, the prosecutor asked for an extension to the normal time allowed for briefs to be prepared for the court because of a high number of crashes in Victoria recently.

“There’s been 14 fatalities in two weeks that MCIU (Major Collision Investigation Unit) is dealing with,” the prosecutor said.

Mr Cheri’s solicitor Kate Freshwater asked for a French interpreter to be made available to the court on the next occasion, as that was her client’s first language.

The matter will next return to court in November.

Mr Cheri’s bail was extended.

It includes conditions that he not drive and that he not attend any international points of departure.
