Builders, dancers, chefs — the young people of Greater Shepparton learnt the world is their oyster last week.

Almost 2000 people descended upon the Careers Day Out expo at the Wodonga TAFE complex, previously known as DECA, across Wednesday, May 20 and Thursday, May 21.

The expo had a range of stalls to meet all career aspirations — and to pique some interests — with a creative hub, hospitality stalls, demonstrations from emergency services, a building and construction area, and health hubs among the attractions.

Event co-ordinator Hannah Ryan said after several years of hiatus, it was exciting to see it all come to fruition.

“This year we’ve really grown the event — there’s more hands-on activities, more curated hubs, a lot more demos and workshops across the site,” she said.

“Taking over the whole site definitely allowed the kids to have more connection, more engagement — there’s been smiles all around.”

The two-day event also featured an open public session in addition to the school visiting days.

Organisers worked to prioritise involving local businesses and people, hosting workshops on topics ranging from butchery to floristry for the event-goers.

Notre Dame Year 10 student Jack Tenace has his sights set on being a builder, making his own toolbox in the building and construction area during his visit.

“It’s been fun, I’ve had the chance to meet new people but it’s also opened my eyes to all the things I could do,” he said.
