Benalla’s Cathrene Stone celebrated her 100th birthday with friends and family on Sunday, August 7.
Party guests arrived from across Victoria, and interstate, to celebrate with Catherine, who said the day was terrific.
“There was 55 people here,” Cathrene said.
“Some came from Melbourne, some from Wagga Wagga, Mildura, and Swan Hill.
“A few from Perth couldn’t make it, but they called to wish me a happy birthday.
“I got lots of lovely presents and a heap of flowers.
“The cake was amazing. I think we’re going to be eating cake for a few weeks yet.
“And all the other leftovers. But we always figure it’s better to have too much than not enough.”
Cathrene’s daughter Dorothy said it took some organising, but the party was enjoyed by all.
“Mum travelled around quite a bit during her life,” Dorothy said.
“She was born in Shepparton, and has mainly lived in the area.
“Then she moved to Melbourne, but about 40 years ago she decided she was a country girl and moved back to Benalla.
“She was in a lovely old house. But eventually we built a new house and now she lives with us here, still in Benalla.
“She’s a very private person and didn’t want too much of a fuss. But she ended up having a great time.
“I think today (Monday, August 8) is all about her getting some rest and relaxation.
“I’ve still got lots to do. I need to work out where to put all these flowers and remember where everything goes.”
To mark the occasion Cathrene received letters from Queen Elizabeth, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews, Federal Member for Indi Helen Haines and State Member for Euroa Steph Ryan.
Cathrene said one of the highlights of the day was having a talk with a young relative who was telling her all about what she would be doing when she turns 100.
“She’s still got a few years yet before she catches up,” Cathrene said with a grin.
