The north-east’s premiere South Asian New Year event is headed for the Lake Benalla foreshore on April 15.

The event will celebrate the start of the solar new year with traditional games, dancing, fun for all ages and food trucks and vendors.

An event spokesperson said whether poeple know the event as Vishu (Kerala new year), Puthandu (Tamil new year), Songkran (Thai new year), Khmer new year (Cambodia), Vaishaki (Sikh new year), they will know that this is a time to get together and enjoy each other’s company.

“Test your strength playing kotta pora, a game played on a suspended beam where the objective is to knock your opponent on to the soft mattress below,” the spokesperson said

“Share your inner artist in the game aliyata aha thabeema, a competition to see who can draw the elephant’s eye.

“Feel like smashing something? We have you covered with kana mutti bindeema — the aim of this game is to find and smash the winning pot with a pole to release glitter or coloured water.

“The catch? You have to find and smash the pots while blindfolded.

“(Maybe you’re) looking to run your kids in to the ground so they catch some early and easy sleep in the holidays? We have you covered with a jumping castle for young ones.”

If games are not your style, organisers have a range of tantalising food available, with a variety of food trucks and cuisines on offer.

See if you can find something new and delicious to taste while enjoying the atmosphere.

The event will feature dance styles from Sri Lanka, India, and Nepal on the big stage.

Come and enjoy South Asian beats and welcome the start of the solar new year with Benalla’s own Migrant Association from 3pm to 10pm on April 15.
