The CFA has declared a total fire ban for the Northern Country region.

The ban will take effect tomorrow, Wednesday, December 13, across Greater Shepparton City, Campaspe Shire, Greater Bendigo City, Loddon Shire, Moira Shire and Strathbogie Shire.

Extreme fire danger conditions are expected to hit the north and northwest of Victoria tomorrow, with severe thunderstorms expected in central and eastern Victoria.

This means starting from 12.01am until 11.59pm tomorrow, no fires are allowed to be lit in the open air or remain alight.

The fire ban is also applicable to the Wimmera and Mallee regions.

CFA chief officer Jason Heffernan said it’s important people are prepared for severe conditions tomorrow.

“Tomorrow’s conditions will make it difficult for firefighters to suppress a fire should one start,” Mr Heffernan said.

“We’re asking people to follow the strict conditions associated with the total fire ban declaration.

“Understand how the increased fire risk will impact you and ensure your fire plan covers all possible contingencies.”

To check for further information, visit the CFA website, where total fire bans are usually published by 5pm the day before the ban.

Residents should also ensure they have access to more than one source of information, which include the below.

  • ABC local radio, commercial and designated radio stations of Sky News
  • The VicEmergency App
  • The VicEmergency website
  • The VicEmergency Hotline
  • CFA or VicEmergency Twitter or Facebook.

A total fire ban is a legal requirement and severe penalties apply for lighting fires on days of total fire ban.
