The CFA has warned residents in the region to not be complacent with fire after multiple units attended two fires in the Shepparton district on the afternoon of Monday, January 2.
The first was a shed fire in Northgate St, Mooroopna, and the second was a grass and stubble fire at Tatura East.
CFA commander and duty officer for District 22 headquarters in Shepparton Pete Dedman said the alarm for the Northgate St fire was raised at 3.45pm, with seven units attending.
They found a 12m by 6m shed on fire, but had the blaze under control by 4.12pm and out by 5.15pm.
The fire is not considered suspicious, but is still being investigated.
Two firefighters suffered heat stress during the incident due to the conditions, but were later cleared of any serious harm.
As the CFA units were completing their tasks at the Northgate St fire, they were called around 5pm to respond to a grass fire on Downer Rd, Tatura East.
An estimated 1.5 hectares was burnt in the fire, which was brought under control by 5.20pm.
Concerns over the weather conditions led to 11 units responding to the call, but it was extinguished before a greater threat emerged.
Its cause is still being investigated.
Mr Dedman said the recent floods should not lead people to think there was not a threat this fire season.
“I’d like to take this opportunity to remind people that there is warmer weather now and that there is a lot of dry grass around,” he said.
“Even though we had floods not too long ago, there’s a lot of fuel around for bush and grass fires.
“There is no burning off at the moment. We are in the fire danger period, so people need to get a permit for burning off.”
