The CFA is running a ‘Give Us a Hand’ campaign as it ramps up recruitment efforts.
CFA acting chief officer Garry Cook said there was a desperate need within regional communities for more volunteers, especially those who could respond during the day, and he was also hoping younger members of the community would join the current 52,000-strong force.
“We are calling on anyone interested in taking on a new challenge, learning new skills, meeting new people or giving back to their community to get in touch with their local CFA brigade or go to the CFA website,” Mr Cook said.
Mr Cook added that volunteering with the CFA was an incredible experience and that volunteers could work on the front line as a CFA firefighter or in a support position within the brigade.
“From road crash rescues, structure, grass and scrub fires to hazmat incidents, no two days are the same at CFA,” he said.
Mr Cook said those who volunteered would have the opportunity to develop new skills and grow as a person and as a leader.
“The camaraderie, sense of purpose and lifelong friends are just some of the many benefits you can gain from being a volunteer,” he said.
Strathmerton CFA captain Evan Bourchier has 35 members in his brigade as well as junior members, who fall in the 11 to 16 age bracket.
He echoed the words of Mr Cook when talking about the rewarding experience he has had.
“I started as a junior member 22-odd years ago. The best part of the job is the people you meet and are able to assist in times of crisis,” Mr Bourchier said
“It is rewarding giving back to the community in times of emergency.”
