City of Greater Shepparton Mayor Shane Sali was re-elected into the role for a further two years during a council meeting on Thursday night.
It will be the second term as mayor for Cr Sali, who was elected unopposed to the position in June this year after Kim O’Keeffe stepped down to run a state election campaign for the seat of Shepparton District.
An amendment was brought to the meeting to extend the mayoral term to two years rather than one, to help bring stability during an anticipated long-term flood recovery.
Cr Sali said he was grateful for the opportunity to represent the council and the people of Greater Shepparton.
“Together we’ve just been through a major flood disaster and I must say I was overwhelmed by how the people of Greater Shepparton came together,” he said.
“Now, while others are napping, we must actively grow our economy; bolster existing businesses, attract new businesses and inspire greater economic growth.
“Now more than ever, we must attract and secure funding for community facilities, health, education, and major infrastructure projects.”
The deputy mayor position will be filled at a future council meeting after the vote was tied between Cr Anthony Brophy, who has held the role for the past 12 months, and Cr Sam Spinks.
This role would continue to be a one-year term.
The mayoral election was delayed by a week due to the flood event in the Goulburn Valley, and was followed by the October council meeting.
