Rao Medical Clinic hosted its inaugural Reconciliation Day at the Tocumwal War Memorial Hall last week.
The National Reconciliation Week theme for 2024, Now More Than Ever, is a reminder to all of us that no matter what, the fight for justice and the rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people will, and must, continue.
The event organisers had a goal in mind of promoting health and Closing the Gap, while finding and making connections to the community.
There was a beautiful dot painting artwork display made by Aunty Iris Troutman who invited everyone to add to the painting in the spirit of reconciliation. This artwork will be presented back to Rao Medical in the coming weeks to put inside the clinic.
There was also a vaccination stand for COVID-19 and flu vaccines, service provider stalls and a barbecue lunch.
Going forward, the clinic will be working with Many Mobs Indigenous Corporation to continue its work to grow connections within the community and Close the Gap.
They recognise that structural change in the way the medical sector works with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people is needed and for them to have a genuine say in the design and delivery of policies, programs and services that affect them to ensure that better life outcomes are achieved.

Tocumwal Lions Community Hostel has launched a ‘Sweeten Our Care!’ fundraiser campaign.
The hostel prides itself on compassion, companionship and comfort intersect.
The residents deserve the best care and attention and this fundraiser has been organised to support providing exceptional services.
The talented team of cooks will be whipping up batches of mouth-watering cinnamon sugar-coated donuts.
Donuts symbolise warmth, joy, and togetherness. By indulging in a donut, you’re not just satisfying your taste buds – you’re contributing to the well-being of the wonderful residents at the hostel.
Donuts are $1.50 each, $7 a half dozen or $11 for a baker’s dozen.

The cut off date for orders is on Monday, July 1.
Collection of donuts will be at the hostel on Monday, July 8 from 10am.

On Saturday, June 22 the Tocumwal Golf and Bowls Club is holding a charity day, raising funds for the Cancer Council.
Entry for the day is $15 per player, with $5 from every entry going straight to the Cancer Council.
There are no Green Fees for members’ guests (one per member).
Registration for the event is 11am for a noon shotgun start.
Members will need to call the Pro Shop on 5874 9172 to book in their guests with their Golflink numbers.

As part of the Berrigan Shire Council new three bin system, new bins have now been delivered to Tocumwal, including a green lidded organics bin (240L) – collected weekly, plus a house caddy and green liners (to fill with food scraps before placing in outside green bin), a red lidded general waste bin (240L) to be collected fortnightly and a yellow lidded recycling bin (240L) to be collected fortnightly.
The new collection days for Tocumwal will be Thursday or Friday, depending on your address.
If your address is in the yellow section your collection will be Thursday and blue will be on Friday. Maps for these locations were provided in the house caddy.
On Monday, June 24 you will place your general waste and recycling bins out for collection (on the Tuesday morning).
Once emptied, the council has instructed residents to leave them on the kerb, and if possible place them upside down.
Your general waste and recycling bins will be taken away on either Tuesday, June 25 or Wednesday, June 26.
Place your green lidded organics and your red lidded general waste bins on the kerb for collection on either Thursday, July 4 or Friday, July 5 depending on your collection day.
