Get in early.

That’s the message from Cobram Lions president Janet Austin as the traditional Cobram Lions Christmas cakes and puddings hit the shelves.

Dessert lovers can purchase a 1.5kg cake for $20, 1kg cake for $16 and Christmas plum puddings for $16.

The delectable treats are on sale at the Artavilla Emporium, Cobram Newsagency, Supreme Meats, Mitre 10, AG Warehouse and any event that the Lions attend or run, including the Twilight Christmas market.

Ms Austin said her favourite was the 1.5kg fruit cake.

“They’re a moist cake; they’re great value,” she said.

Ms Austin’s preferred method of eating the cake is to serve a slice with coffee.

As for the pudding, Ms Austin believes pudding with the traditional trimmings is the best way to go.

“You have to have your custard and ice-cream together,” she said.

Traditionally, the cakes have been a hit with Cobram residents, and Ms Austin advises potential buyers to get in early.

“They’re very popular. Last year, we did sell out,” she said.

Ms Austin said the cakes and puddings were ideal for those wanting to save money or those looking for something to put under the tree.

“They’re good value, and they make an excellent Christmas present,” she said.

Money raised from the sales of the puddings and cakes, as with all Cobram Lions projects, will go back to the Cobram community via donations.

Cobram Lions Club also has tickets for its traditional Christmas raffle on sale.

Some 66 businesses donated to the raffle, with about $6000 worth of prizes to be won.

Items in the raffle include power tools, kitchenware, vouchers and beverages.

Tickets can be purchased at the Cobram Lions-Mitre 10 monthly barbecue, the November and December markets and in the weeks leading up to the Twilight Market.

Lions members will also be selling raffle tickets at IGA and Woolworths.

The Christmas raffle will be drawn at the Lions Twilight Christmas market on December 15.
