The highly anticipated state-of-the-art headquarters for the Cobram SES is nearing completion, with hopes a new building will bring in fresh volunteers.

The building, located on Cobram-Koonoomoo Rd, will replace the current building in Tocumwal and is set to be operational at the end of May or by mid-June.

Ground was broken on the new building on July 29 last year by former Moira Shire mayor Libro Mustica.

SES Cobram unit deputy controller Luke Herezo said the building’s completion would revolutionise operations in the Cobram area.

“Back in the day when Cobram SES started it was located in Tocumwal, 20 minutes away,” Mr Herezo said.

“At the moment we don’t have our own space, we are currently housed with NSW SES. So for the last eight to 10 years we have been fighting to get an SES HQ in the actual township of Cobram.”

Mr Herezo said the new place would be larger and was future-proofed to ensure it would remain relevant.

Four trucks or eight cars can fit in the new building, which also features operational rooms, lockers and change rooms.

There will also be space to train SES members for all aspects of operations.

Mr Herezo said he was hoping that with the new building would come new recruits. He believes the SES is a great way to socialise and give back to the local community.

“We are a community in a small town, volunteering is what started the community and it is enjoyable,” he said.

“It’s just like any other sporting club or other community groups. It’s sociable.”

Alongside the social aspect Mr Herezo said SES members received training and qualifications in skills that could assist them in other aspects of their lives.

“People can get boating qualifications, chainsaw qualifications, licensing to drive machinery, as well as first aid,” he said.
