Cobram Secondary College Year 11 students Angus Maughan and Harrison Barnes have been named Rural Youth Ambassadors for 2024.

The Rural Youth Ambassadors program is run by the Country Education Partnership, a not-for-profit organisation that seeks to support high-quality education within rural and remote communities across Victoria.

The Rural Youth Ambassadors program is designed to provide young people within rural and remote communities the opportunity to develop leadership skills to promote youth agency with the goal of improving student life and learning opportunities and outcomes.

The move to elect two students from the same school is unprecedented and CSC principal Kimberley Tempest said her two students have a great opportunity to develop and make a difference.

“(The) students will practice all aspects of leadership and will have an opportunity to liaise with the Department of Education and other leaders in their fields,” she said.

Angus and Harrison will participate in a three-day Rural Youth Ambassador Forum in Melbourne and undertake various practical leadership activities around the area.

The importance of the ambassador role isn't lost on Harrison and he said that he looks forward to what future possibilities his new role would lead to.

Angus said he hopes he can make a positive contribution to the local community.

“To me, being a Rural Youth Ambassador makes me feel proud to represent the rural communities of Victoria," Angus said.

“I’m thrilled to undertake this role and make a change for my local community.”
