The Free Press has sat down with Kyabram’s high-school leadership cohort to hear from the young future leaders in our region.

The St Augustine’s College 2024 college captains are Ethan Ciavarella and Isla Carver.

Ethan Ciavarella

Now in his 13th year at St Augustine’s College, Ethan wanted to leave his mark on the school.

“I want to leave an impact on the school, I want to leave knowing I’ve done something to help out the school and wasn’t just here,” he said.

He said he hoped to be someone the students could look up to, both in his role as captain and as a fellow student.

“I hope to be a positive role model for the younger students and not just the younger students but the ones that are becoming senior students at the school, because through COVID, most of us didn’t really have people to look up to because we were at home,” Ethan said.

Life after high school is somewhat undecided, but Ethan has study plans to look forward to.

“I think I’m going to go to university but I might take a gap year,” he said.

“I want to do civil engineering somewhere in Melbourne.

“I’m not entirely sure where, but I want to get out of home and do things.”

Outside school, Ethan plays football for Lancaster.

Isla Carver

In Year 8, Isla was a house captain, which motivated her to keep applying for leadership positions.

“Coming off that, I was really eager to become a college captain,” Isla said.

“I was looking forward to giving back to the school and being that positive role model for younger students, but just leaving a legacy.”

Embracing the new and maintaining the old is Isla’s goal.

“I’m striving to introduce new things and continuing the long-running programs,” she said.

Next year, Isla is planning to take a gap year before beginning tertiary education.

“I’ve wanted to take a gap year purely to play netball at home and work, then I want to go to university in Geelong and do marine biology in a Bachelor of Science,” Isla said.

Isla is a dedicated member of the netball team at the Kyabram Football Netball Club.

When not studying, Isla can be found at her job at a local sports store.
