Garden club turns up the colour

Yarrawonga and District Garden Club produced its biggest array of flower arrangements yet for this year’s Mothers’ Day - with strong sales.

The club, which has been putting the arrangements together from scratch for about five years, will use the proceeds for the club’s running costs and donate the remainder to the Royal Children’s Hospital as well as some local charities, including Friends in Common’s Cuppa for Cancer.

Preparations began about two weeks before Mothers’ Day and involved about a dozen of the club’s members, and well over 100 arrangements.

Some chrysanthemum donated by a Glenrowan property owner were the highlight of this year’s collection.

Club president Shirley Brightwell said the record array came despite dwindling membership.

“We don’t have a lot of young ones coming on,” she said. “We probably peaked at about 65-70 members but now we’re down to around 45.

“But we have some multi-skilled people with different skills and styles and they’ve come up with a good range of arrangements.”

Ms Brightwell said all newcomers were welcome, with the club – which has recently enjoyed field trips to Myrtleford and Tumbarumba – holding monthly meetings.

An eagle-eyed resident brought the above situation to the Yarrawonga Chronicle’s attention last week.

We notified council and Moira’s maintenance teams were quick on the job, dispatching a unit to get the matter fixed within a few days.

Thanks to our resident – looks much better.

The amazing Aurora Australis

The Aurora Australis was seen in the south western sky on Saturday evening.

We're used to seeing an evening glow from farmers burning stubble around this time of the year but this was truly spectacular!

The Aurora Australis lit up the night skies over the weekend with some incredible scenes right across the region.

Paul Squires captured the phenomenon in this photo above from Squires Winery on Saturday evening.

To all ring pull collectors.

Thank you so much for your support over the years.

Unfortunately, our organisers have decided to discontinue this worthy cause. The Royal Melbourne Childrens Cancer Research organisation has benefited from the many thousands of dollars raised over the time this small but concerted effort by yourselves and many Masonic Lodges throughout Victoria have collectively been able to donate over the years. Once again a BIG thank you to you all.
