The Yarrawonga Lions are hosting the inaugural Dachshund Cup on Sunday, November 3 and urge all dachshund owners to come down for a fun day.

Join in the Dachie Cup

Whilst most of the attention will be on the Berrigan or Melbourne Cup in the first week of November, Yarrawonga Lions will be holding a race and cup presentation with a difference.

The inaugural Dachshund Cup will be held at the Yarrawonga Showgrounds on Sunday, November 3.

Imagine a pack of dachshunds dressed as hotdogs racing for glory down a 35-metre track.

There are races for age group dachshunds and an open small breed section for dogs around 30cm height. So, if you have a little dog come and join in the fun of racing.

There will be a second chance competitors race to give non-winners a chance to try again.

For those not confident their dog will cross the finish line, you can enter them into a novelty event, longest and shortest dog, smallest and largest dog, and “Fashions of the field” type events.

These events are open to all breed of dogs without and entry fee.

The idea for this event was presented to Yarrawonga Lions Club by Yarrawonga resident Margie Wickham who is a dachshund owner who has participated in these events.

As well as the entertaining races, there will be stalls and food available with the official opening at 11 am and then the heats commence.

Yarrawonga Lions are working hard to ensure that this is a fun filled day for competitors and spectators with a gold coin donation to enter and/or a registration fee of $15 per dog for these events with registrations available on Try booking – “Dachie Cup”.

All proceeds from this event will be donated to Australian Lions Hearing Dogs, who train and make available, free of charge, hearing assistance dogs and medical alert dogs.

Local Margie Wickham was the brains behind the event, being a dachshund owner and participating in these events for years.

The training and placement cost is just under $40,000, however, this is a gift to each deaf or hard of hearing applicant from our incredible supporters.

Due to the high demand and limited space, there is currently a two to three year waiting period.

All events will be held in a fenced area and it would be advised that ALL dogs must be on a leash and those racing must have two handlers.

Yarrawonga Lions would like to thank sponsors for this event – Pet Stock Yarrawonga, Yarrawonga Veterinary Clinic and Cobram Veterinary Clinic – who have supplied prizes and goodies for the raffle.

A big thank you also to Margie Wickham who has donated ribbons, stubbie holders and numerous doggie items.

Lastly, thanks to Lion Debbie Van Corler who has created embroidered bandanas for the competitors.

So come and enjoy the day and experience something different.
