Ahead of National Recycling Week, Benalla Rural City Council is committing to a sustainable future.

Mayor Bernie Hearn said she was thrilled to be a part of a council leading the way in achieving a circular economy and responsible waste management.

“At the forefront of these initiatives is the opening of our new transfer station and embracing a shift from weight-based to volume-based pricing,” she said.

“Customers will now be charged based on the volume and type of waste they dispose of, encouraging responsible segregation and recycling practices.

“Our new transfer station, along with the introduction of textile recycling, signifies our commitment to a greener future for Benalla Rural City. By embracing these changes, we’re empowering our residents to be active participants in reducing waste and promoting recycling.”

Along with these new initiatives, the Victorian Government’s Container Deposit Scheme has arrived in Benalla at Foott Waste Solutions at the start of this month, allowing the community to recycle their eligible drink containers for a 10-cent refund.

“The Container Deposit Scheme encourages a circular economy, where materials are recycled and reused, minimising waste and conserving resources. It’s a wonderful opportunity for our community to actively engage in environmental conservation,” Cr Hearn said.

National Recycling Week takes place from November 13 to 19, and council wants to encourage all residents to embrace these initiatives.
