Seventeen community groups will share a total of just over $17,000 in Greater Shepparton City Council grants after their applications were approved.

The grants range from $250 up to $2000 to assist a range of groups, including seniors, historical, sporting, schools, healthcare and cultural interests.

The grants were approved at council’s meeting on Tuesday, May 16.

Speaking during the meeting, Deputy Mayor Anthony Brophy said the grants provided the community with value for money.

“This is round two (of the grants) and when I look at it, the first thing I look at, 17 particular events for $17,000, now that’s bang for bucks, isn’t it?” he said.

“Seriously, 17 particular events that can get up because we’ve actually put money towards that.

“It is ratepayer money and it is being put back into the ratepayer events, back into the local community there.

“It really does cover the broad church that is Greater Shepparton here.

“This is a fantastic program and I look forward to it continuing.”

Speaking after the meeting, Mayor Shane Sali reinforced Cr Brophy’s comments.

“We know how these grants, in some ways, mean so much to community organisations that put on events that are heavily driven by volunteers,” he said.
