Construction has commenced on a new mental health facility in Shepparton designed exclusively for young individuals aged 16 to 25.

The Youth Prevention and Recovery Care centre in Shepparton is the result of a focused effort by the Victorian Government to provide a 24/7 community-based care alternative.

This initiative, a direct response to the critical need identified by the Royal Commission into Victoria’s Mental Health System, aims to reshape mental health care for the younger demographic.

It serves not only as an early-stage recovery option but also as a preventive measure against hospital admissions for those struggling with mental health challenges.

Victorian Mental Health Minister Ingrid Stitt said expanding the YPARC service network across the state, including in Shepparton, was a significant step towards addressing the need for more youth mental health services.

“We’re giving young Victorians confidence that when they need mental health support, there are local services that will give them the tailored mental healthcare they need, close to home,” she said.

Shepparton’s YPARC facility, brought to life through the collaboration between the Victorian Health Building Authority, Goulburn Valley Health and Nicholson Construction, is part of a broader $141 million investment by the government.

This investment aims to double the state’s YPARC network capacity.

It includes developing new centres in Ballarat, Geelong, Heidelberg and Traralgon and upgrading existing facilities in Bendigo, Dandenong and Frankston.

Designed as a referral-based service, the Shepparton YPARC centre will feature a home-like environment, with 10 bedrooms, ensuites, communal spaces and outdoor areas.

This setup ensures that young people can continue their daily activities, such as school or work, while receiving the care and support they need.

State Member for Northern Victoria Jaclyn Symes pointed out the benefits of localised care.

“We know how much better health outcomes are when young people get treatment close to their families, support networks and the local community,” she said.

“That’s why we’re delivering a new youth mental health facility right here in Shepparton.”
