Construction of replacement bridge to impact road users

Popular route: The construction will allow Girgarre-Rushworth Rd to return to being a key route for freight and drivers travelling to and from Fonterra in Stanhope.

The Victorian Government has announced works to replace the Girgarre-Rushworth Rd bridge, 5km north of Rushworth, will start this month.

The reasons behind the replacement are the age of the bridge and its condition, which allows for a load limit of only 42.5 tonnes and a reduced speed limit.

The $4.9 million project will create smoother journeys for all and enable more heavy vehicles to travel the route, keeping the region’s farmers and freight operators better connected.

Girgarre-Rushworth Rd will close at the Waranga Western Channel for the project’s duration, and road users who frequent this route can detour via Clarke, Middle, and Home Rds.

Heavy vehicles should continue to use the two current detour options via Corop and Colbinabbin or Murchison and Tatura.

When the announcement was made in August 2022, state Member for Northern Victoria Jaclyn Symes said: “We know the local population is growing, so we need to ensure we have the infrastructure in place to support that growth both now and well into the future.”
