Greater Shepparton City Council is informing residents of the appropriate way to dispose of sandbags collected during the January flood event.

The community was prepared for the rising waters, with sandbags collected from six collection points across Greater Shepparton.

However, sandbags are single-use items, and you should not empty them and reuse them, as they fall apart over time.

Now the threat of flooding has eased, council is advising residents to do the following with their sandbags.

Do:

  • Spread the sand on your lawn or use it in the garden
  • Use for landscaping or flower beds
  • Throw out discarded bags without sand in your red-lid bin
  • Take discarded bags to the Shepparton Resource Recovery Centre

Don’t:

  • Fill sandbags with sand and reuse them
  • Reuse sandbags that flood waters have contaminated
  • Dump sandbags in rivers, on nature strips, in public places or roadway gutters

If you’re physically unable to dispose of the sandbags due to serious injury, disability or being elderly, contact council for assistance on 5832 9700 or email council@shepparton.vic.gov.au
