Moira Shire Council allocated funding totalling $48,363 to seven local organisations at the council meeting held on Wednesday, April 26.

A total of 11 submissions were made to the Community Strengthening Grants Program — Major Grants — Round One 2022/23, which was open between January and March, of which seven were successful.

All submissions were evaluated against the council’s Community Strengthening Grants policy, and the assessment panel that reviewed the grants was made up of personnel from across various council departments.

The following organisations received funding:

Yarrawonga Neighbourhood House Inc: $5000

Funding was given to upgrade the phone system to the new Connect System to meet increased demands.

Strathmerton Community Steering Committee: $10,000

Funding was granted for the installation of history boards at the Strathmerton Lions Park to attract tourists and inform them of local history.

Wunghnu Bowling Club: $10,000

The club required fencing to be replaced due to it being deemed a hazard. Council deemed the funding request justified, as the club was used by many locals.

Youanmite Hall: $10,000

Upgrades were required to the hall’s outdated kitchen and air conditioning in preparation for its 100-year anniversary celebrations.

Yarrawonga Mulwala Basketball Association: $5000

Funding was granted for the club to engage an external organisation to help develop a strategic plan for the club’s growth. The council believed the funding would assist in the club’s growth and strengthen gender and cultural diversity.

Yarrawonga Mulwala Historical Association: $3363

Money was given to assist in the digitisation of Yarrawonga Mercury newspapers to celebrate 100 years of the Yarrawonga Traffic Bridge. Council believed funding the project would assist in dissemination of the history of the region.

Lions Club of Yarrawonga: $5000

Money was granted by council to the club for the installation of tables, chairs and park shelter at the Lions Park in Yarrawonga.
