Crack out the cowboy boots, the Avenel Stampede is back

Back for another year: The bull riding was a hit in 2022.

Whip out the rhinestones and cowboy boots for the Avenel Stampede.

Open to the public, Avenel Primary School’s country and western-themed annual fundraiser boasts a yabby race, mechanical bull-riding competition and renowned band Mike and the Bounty Hunters.

Last year the event raised more than $21,000 for the school, with the help of some very generous benefactors.

This year, event organisers are hoping to raise more than $10,000 to help bridge the gap between state government funding and what the school needs.

The stampede will be held at Fowles Wine and exceptional food and drink is guaranteed, with the venue donating all profits from the evening to the school.

There will also be a silent auction with an option for everyone, including Yeti products, an Esky, an hour introductory flight course through the flight school at Mangalore Airport, AFL tickets with Medallion Club access and local business donations of wine and vouchers.

Laura Jeffery is one of the event organisers. She said she was blown away by the success of the event last year and was ready to buckle up for another wild night.

“People were surprised at how much fun it was ... there was lots of tassles and rhinestones,” she said.

“The bull didn’t stop working from when the event started at 6pm to when we had the finals at 9pm. It was quite the spectacle.

“Last year the guy that took out the top prize was a Caulfield Cup-winning jockey.

“The band is pretty big within the country and western scene. They have a spot at the Tamworth Country Music Festival.

“Even for those that don’t like country music, it is still a great night.

“We are putting this on for the adults of the community irrespective of whether they have an association with the school.”

There will be prizes on the night for the best dressed.

The event will run from 6pm on June 17.
