A school crossing along the Northern Hwy in Echuca will have a police presence after reports of repeated targeting of crossing supervisors.

Campaspe Shire Council chief executive Pauline Gordon said council takes the safety of crossing supervisors very seriously.

"(Victoria) Police have organised a presence at the crossing following a number of continued incidents that have threatened the safety of our school crossing supervisors,” she said.

“These have been reported to police who are investigating those incidents, in particular a recent situation where the safety of our school crossing staff was compromised.

“Council takes the safety of its staff and that of the community extremely seriously. We are currently not staffing the crossing.

‘’However, we are working with Vic Police and the State Department of Transport and Planning (as this road is a state government road) to discuss future options for the crossing.”

On Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday morning the crossing was not staffed. However on Wednesday, council had two of its officers at the crossing doing a risk assessment during school times.

St Mary’s Primary School Echuca informed parents on the school portal about 4.30pm on Wednesday about the situation.

Echuca police have confirmed they will be patrolling the area.
