Cubby house burns, home saved

Firefighters were on scene for the blaze on Ochetyre St.

Police are investigating the cause of a blaze which burned a cubby house at the rear of an Ochtertyre St home in west Deniliquin on Thursday.

Originally reported as a structure fire, Deniliquin’s NSW Fire + Rescue crews arrived on the scene about 4.25pm.

With two trucks, nine firefighters tackled the blaze on two fronts - from Ochtertyre St and Macauley St.

The fire did spread to the home’s carport, and there were fears it would get into the roof of the home.

With some smoke entering the home, firefighters in breathing apparatus entered to conduct thermal checks to ensure the blaze was no longer a threat of spreading further.

The home’s occupants were not home at the time of the fire, but NSW Ambulance paramedics were on site in case anyone was impacted by the smoke.

Murray River Police District detectives were in attendance.

Firefighters handed the scene to police after just more than two hours.

A cause for the blaze has not yet been revealed.
