Thursday, August 22 marks Daffodil Day in 2024, and it’s one local florist’s favourite day of the year.

The team at Renato’s Florist love being a part of Cancer Council’s Daffodil Day and promoting the national event that raises money for cancer research.

However, owner Leeanne Archer said they like to put their own spin on things and donate locally.

“We’ll donate a portion of the sale of a bunch of daffodils to the oncology department at GV Health, or maybe Shepparton Private Hospital, depending on who will take the money,” she said.

“We could donate it back to the Cancer Council, but it’s nicer just to keep it local.

“It’s not a lot of money, but obviously every little bit helps.”

Ms Archer and her husband, Glenn, have owned Renato’s for three years, but Daffodil Day is a long-standing tradition for the flower shop.

“When my aunty and uncle owned the business, they would often tell us that this was one of the biggest days of the year,” Ms Archer said.

“Not as big as Valentine’s Day or Mother’s Day, but it was very big for the community. They would send out hundreds of bunches.”

Ms Archer said there was no better flower with which to mark the day than a daffodil.

“They’re bright and smell really nice; a daffodil just makes everyone happy, doesn’t it?” she said.

Renato’s Florist will be selling daffodil bunches for $15, with $5 from every bunch being donated to a local health service.
