A fan favourite of the Seymour Alternative Farming Expo is the live demonstrations, and the 2024 program will not disappoint with horses, reptiles, drone demos and more among this year’s proceedings.
One of the most notable events is the Beloka Kelpies, which demonstrates the precision, intellect and discipline the breed has.
Owner Paul McPhail will show the brilliance of the breed to the audience through their demonstration as well as entertain the attendees.
During the demonstration, Paul will discuss the uniqueness of the breed and how their training and enrichment needs differ from other breeds.
“It's a good showcase and the dogs really enjoy the event,” Paul said.
“Our demonstration is all about showing off the abilities of the pups, particularly now they work the stock.
“This year we’re coming with a new line up for dogs and a few sheep and we’ll also be in the Learning Hub for a couple days.”
Families are guaranteed to love watching Paul and his dogs as they go through their moves.
After checking out the working dogs, head over to Ozsort, a new cattle sorting sport which is back for its second year at the expo.
Ozsort is a two-rider, cattle-sorting event that sees cattle moved, in order, into a separate pen.
Each of the 10 cattle are numbered and the riders must sort the cattle in order from their randomised starting number.
Cattle must stay in the sorting pen and cannot enter the pen out of ascending order.
“We want to expand our sport and show it to more people, so the expo is a great thing for us to do,” Ozsort creator Andrew Nash said.
The organisation has been doing competitions and lessons with varying levels of rider experience and are ready to show the expo what they can do.
The sport is family-friendly and a great watch and anyone can join the open section on the day.
‘It's great family fun,” Andrew said.
“Come along and enjoy the sport or ask us some questions.”
Other demonstrations during the three-day event include drone demonstrations, reptile displays, whip-cracking championships and, ‘come and try’ and motocross demos.
Seymour Alternative Farming Expo runs from Friday, April 12, to Sunday, April 14, from 9am to 4pm each day at Kings Park Reserve, Tallarook St, Seymour.
