School holidays have arrived and many families are looking for an exciting day out. Avenel Maze might just quench that thirst for adventure.

Operating since 2022, Avenel Maze is themed around Ned Kelly, the bushranger who commanded this region, gaining mythical status.

Jane Starey of Avenel Maze said the amusement park was not only fun but also educational.

“We have two hedge mazes with the quiz that Adrian Fisher designed and geared to different levels,” she said.

“There’s something for the adults, something for teenagers, something for the middle-aged to do in the hedges.

“We have a tricky little tile maze that we call the jailbreak maze.”

There is also the Bushrangers’ Maze, which includes a quiz centred around Ned Kelly.

“Ned Kelly spent many years in Avenel, in fact, he went to school there,” Ms Starey said.

“We hold on to the good part of Ned, but we also let them know what he ended up doing.

“We relate in the sense that Ned rode through the hills exactly where we are, so they can imagine how it was for bushrangers.”

Avenel Maze isn’t only an amusement park, it also hosts events such as weddings and engagements.

“We’ve had people have a lot of gatherings at the maze,” Ms Starey said.

“We find on holidays, family groups will come from the north ... from Albury, for instance or Bendigo, they come up and meet their friends and family from the north, so it’s a good meeting spot.

“They’re welcome to bring food, and we encourage people to bring picnics.”
