Dog trials provide long weekend entertainment

CanAssist members Pat Radford and Mark Hern (far right) were thrilled to receive a donation from Finley MenShed president Gavin Butcher.

With the King’s Birthday weekend coming up, there will be many ways to be entertained in Finley and the surrounding area.

One way to enjoy the outdoors will be to attend the Finley Show Society Dog Pro Sheep Dog Trials to be held at the grounds beginning on Friday, continuing on Saturday and finishing with the finals on Sunday.

Entries have been received by competitors from NSW and Victoria, including some who have represented Australia as well as their state, promising a high standard of trial performance from top dogs.

An invitation is extended to members of the community to attend at any time over the three days.

Entry is free and refreshments will be available.

So please feel free to attend as many times as you wish.

The organisers would like to thank all sponsors with special mention of the major sponsor, Dog Pro.

Many thanks to the Atkinson family who has kindly allowed the use of their sheep for the trials.

This event has proved to be very successful over the years and the group would like to thank everyone for their continued support.

Members of the public are invited to attend the official opening and blessing of the new columbarium which has been constructed under the guidance of Finley Lions Club.

The event will take place this Saturday, June 8, at the Finley Cemetery at 1pm.

Anglican priest Fr Fredrik and Catholic priest Fr Paul will participate in the blessing.

Extensive time and effort have been spent on this project by the Finley Lions Club, however special mention must be made of Gavin Butcher who has devoted more than two years to getting this project to fruition.

The result now is a peaceful, well constructed setting where families can sit and spend time with happy memories of their loved ones in their final resting place.

Please make the time, if possible, to attend the service on Saturday at 1pm to acknowledge the continuing support and hard work put into our community by the Finley Lions Club members.

One could not help but notice the two attractive and outstanding signs placed at the street stall venue in Finley on Saturday when members of Finley Lions Club were selling tickets for the trailer load of wood.

It is understood they were constructed by the gentlemen at Finley MenShed and the signwriting was done by a generous artist called Allan. A very professional presentation!

John O’Rourke was the lucky winner of Saturday’s trailer load of wood. Very deserving as John participates in several local organisations.

The Finley School of Arts, which will be celebrating its 120th anniversary in August, has been well used over the years.

Many fundraising activities took part in the leadup to the official opening in 1904, similar to the event recorded in the Numurkah Leader on Friday, February 28, 1902.

“A grand cycling carnival is to be held on March 19th in aid of the building fund of the Finley School of Arts. £85 is to be distributed in prize money.

“The hon. sec., Mr. F. Hoyle, is, as usual, leaving no stone unturned to make the affair a success.

“Already some first-class riders from Melbourne have nominated. A bazaar is to be held in the evening, and it is to be hoped that a start will soon be made with the new building, as the want of a public hall is greatly felt.”
