A man caught driving on a suspended licence told police he was “going to buy food”, a court has heard.

Muhamad Nuh, 25, of Shepparton was charged with driving on a suspended licence.

Nuh did not appear in Shepparton Magistrates’ Court and his matter was heard in his absence.

Prosecutor Leading Senior Constable Carita Thompson told the court Nuh’s vehicle was flagged by a police automatic number plate recognition device as being owned by a person with a suspended licence on December 4 last year.

She said Nuh’s licence had been suspended for speeding 10 days earlier.

Leading Sen Constable Thompson said Nuh’s English was limited and he told police at the time he was not aware his licence was suspended.

He also told them he was “going to buy food”, Leading Sen Constable Thompson said.

Nuh was fined $750 and ordered to pay court costs, but no conviction was recorded.

His driver’s licence was also suspended for 14 days from June 30.
