Dutch Thunder Wildlife Rescue is teaming up with Planet Ark for National Tree Day 2023, to be held on Sunday, July 30, and is inviting locals to join in.

Dutch Thunder Wildlife Rescue owner Kylee Donkers said the day was a great opportunity to take care of the local environment.

“It also ensures the region continues to be a great place to live and visit. Participants will also get the benefits that come from spending time in the great outdoors,” Ms Donkers said.

“Over 26 million trees have been planted by volunteers since 1996 as part of the program and we are excited for our local community to support the goal of getting another million native plants in the ground this year.”

National Tree Day and Schools Tree Day, which is earlier that same week, are Australia’s largest annual tree-planting and nature care events, and are embraced by communities around Australia.

About 300,000 people take part in the events, which are aimed at encouraging greater understanding of the natural world and what can be done to protect it.

Dutch Thunder Wildlife Rescue’s Community Tree Day event is taking place in Koonoomoo at 173 Levings Rd from 11am to 2pm.

About 1000 native trees and shrubs will be planted at the site.

There will be a free barbecue on the day with lots of giveaways. Residents can register to volunteer at the event via the National Tree Day website at https://treeday.planetark.org/site/10027845
