Kyabram residents are being asked to lock their cars at night following an early morning theft.

Kyabram police have warned residents to lock their cars at night following an early morning theft.

Police are investigating after a car was broken into at a Colbinabbin property on Tuesday, June 11.

Leading Senior Constable Scott Jones said a man in his early 60s was woken in his home about 4.30am by noises outside.

The man ran outside and yelled out to a person who had gained access to his car, Leading Sen Constable Jones said.

A wallet containing personal cards and $50 was taken from the car.

The person left the property in a white single-cab ute, with the Colbinabbin man unsuccessfully chasing the ute, Leading Sen Constable Jones said.

The officer said this should be a reminder for residents to be careful with their belongings.

“This is a wake-up call for people to make sure they lock their cars, especially if you are living in a rural area,” Leading Sen Constable Jones said.

He also encouraged people not to wait before calling 000.

“Make sure you contact 000 as soon as the incident happens — don’t wait until after the fact,” he said.
