Echuca’s Aquatic Reserve has received $322,500 in funding to go towards storm water management and lagoon upgrades.
The funding which was received from the Victorian Government’s Integrated Water Management Program is part of a $432,500 project to improve the function of the Echuca Aquatic Reserve storm water system by enabling it to operate in both high and low rainfall periods and by increasing aeration to prevent algal blooms.
It is also expected to improve the surrounding habitation and overall health of the lagoon before it empties into the Murray River.
Campaspe Shire Mayor Chrissy Weller welcomed the $322,500 in funding and said council would be funding the balance of the project.
“Planning is currently under way for the project and works are set to begin early to mid next year,” Ms Weller said.
Victorian Water Minister Lisa Neville said the project aimed to boost water security and improve the liveability of regional towns.
“With climate change and more extreme climatic events, as well as the expected near doubling of Victoria’s population by 2051, we need to do more with less water,” Ms Neville said.
