Gemma Mills was just four months old when her family did what every child dreams of.
They opened a toy store.
Mum Katrina Mills and her parents, Judy and Richard Beckingham, launched Dotz as a family business in Shepparton.
For nearly nine years, the store has catered for educational and special needs products and activities for children.
However, in an announcement on January 13 via their Facebook business page, the family revealed they had decided to close Dotz permanently.
“The decision wasn’t an easy one, but in the best interest of our family, we know it was the right one,” they said.
During a visit to the store, Ms Mills said that while there is no specific closing date, there is a deadline.
“We won’t be here by February 16... We’ve got to see how we go with the stock, and it’s going down pretty quickly,” she said.
The store’s unique supply of NDIS products is among the most wanted by customers, and its difficulty to obtain them in the area will surely leave a gap.
“It’s been a real pleasure to be able to provide quality toys and educational products to the community, along with all our NDIS resources,” she said.
“Being able to help families and make those resources available locally, that’s been one of the best parts.”
The news of Dotz’s closure has greatly impacted and shocked local families, creating a sense of loss in the community.
Ms Mills said many customers have visited to bid farewell, some even becoming teary-eyed.
“It’s definitely bittersweet... Judy and I have watched kids grow up; we’ve worked with grandparents and watched their grandchildren grow,” she said.
“It is like a little family in itself.”
The Mills-Beckingham family would like to thank everyone in the community – Shepparton, the Goulburn Valley and beyond – for their unwavering support.
It has been the driving force that has helped the business navigate through the past two years of the pandemic and emerge stronger on the other side.
“All of our customers are an absolute delight; it really is one of the best jobs you could have,” Ms Mills said.
“Without their support, we couldn’t have done it and kept it going for the community for as long as we have.
