Events galore on Deni Golf course

The Deniliquin Golf Club continues to punch ‘above its weight’ with various events and activities, and this was evident again over the past week.

Last Friday the club held its 2023 Corporate Golf Day which attracted a full field of 25 teams and will provide a significant financial boost.

Congratulations to everyone involved in another very successful day and evening.

The winning team was Ray White Real Estate, with a score of 56 net, and comprised Hamish Thomson, Harley Moore, Geoff King and Vince Kelly.

Runners-up were Francis Kelly & Grant, comprising David Grant, Peter Grant, Graeme Willoughby and Ross Cowcher with 57 net, and third place went to Brian McCleary Accounting, comprising Peter Rae, Adam Menadue, Harold Clapham and Andrew Johnston with 57.5 net.

On Sunday we had 18 players participate in the Western Riverina District Golf Association Championships played at Rich River.

Congratulations to Vince Kelly who won the men’s championship following a play-off against Rich River’s Tyson McCoomb, and to the Deniliquin 2023 club champion Troy Grant, who won the Men’s Champion of Champions by one stroke from James McLean of Murray Downs.

Also, Jarod Sommerfeld was runner-up in the men’s division one net with an excellent score of 72, while Kerran Leetham and Ross Taylor each took home nearest the pin in their respective grades.

It was a busy weekend, but there’ll be no slowing down on the golf course.

Tomorrow will be men’s monthly medal, then on Sunday we have the Big Freeze Fight MND Charity Day.

This is four-person ambrose with 10am shotgun start.

The $50 entry covers a barbecue and novelty events, with all proceeds going to the MND Foundation.

It has become a big event on our annual calendar and this Sunday is sure to be no exception.

The annual Winter Classic is on the King’s Birthday weekend, and will again by fourball best ball stableford, with 18 hole events on Saturday and Sunday, and overall 36 hole event.

Singles pennant starts on July 16 and the club wants to fill two handicap teams and one scratch team, which will require 15 players. Put your name on the sheet in the pro shop. The pennant season will be for five weeks.

If there are any juniors out there who want to learn how to play our great game, or improve their developing skills, why not join the Junior Golf Clinics which start this afternoon at 4pm.

The program lasts five weeks at a total cost of $50, with teaching from PGA professional Jody Fleming.

In other results over the past week, on Saturday there was a stableford aggregate won comfortably by Wendy and Ken Pearce with 76, from Prue Grant and Jen Choice 68.

Last Thursday the ladies stableford event was won in A-grade by Kerran Leetham with 38 points from runner-up Pauline Davis 33, and in B-grade the winner was Esther Bolton with an impressive 41 points from runner-up Ruth Peacock 38.

In Wednesday’s stableford event the A-grade winner was Tom Maw on 41 points from runner-up John Radeski 37, and in B-grade Anthony Erickson had 39 to win from runner-up Ken Maher 36.

Members are encouraged to support Friday night activities.

Why not come along to the club tonight and try your luck in the raffle and enjoy a meal.

Raffle tickets will be on sale from 6pm with draws at 7.30. Meals are available tonight and tomorrow night, with reservations preferred.

Our volunteers continue to be the backbone of the club. Volunteers are still required in the pro shop, as well as for the ‘Adopt a Fairway’ program. Please assist if you can.
