A group of Gowrie St Primary School students have become rap artists for an exhibition presented by the Greater Shepparton Lighthouse Project.

The voices of about 15 students can be heard while viewing the Art In The Heart display as part of the Shepparton Festival.

Express yourself: Noel Scott.

The project came out of a First Nations’ oriented program at Gowrie St Primary School called Aunties, giving students the opportunity to express their feelings through poetry and rap.

Ready to rap: Chantillee Bellou, Mia Morgan and Halo Joachim.

GSLP secured funding for the Melbourne-based School of Living Music to visit Shepparton and record the raps and GSLP communications co-ordinator Amy De Paola said the students loved the experience.

“They were all absolutely in their element and really engaged in the process,” she said.

Instructions: Tameilia Baksh, Leilani Morehu Bamblett, Halo Joachim and Leila Froome.

“If you sit and listen to [the lyrics] they’re quite earnest in terms of the kids expressing their feelings and pride in their culture.”

The exhibition is on daily from 10am to 4pm at 69 High St, Shepparton, until Sunday, April 3.

Group effort: Halo Joachim, Mia Morgan, Leilani Morehu Bamblett, Leila Froome, Shanie Morgan, Kartel Joachim, Jerome McGee and Nulla Morgan.
