Extra bins ready for campers

As the weather warms and the Melbourne Cup public holiday approaches, Campaspe Shire will soon be abuzz with campers ready to relax and explore our region.

Sustainability director Michael Sharp said council would be installing additional waste skip bins at Echuca East boat ramp, Victoria Park, Torrumbarry Roadhouse and Gunbower Recreation Reserve from November 1 to 6 to cope with campers’ waste.

“Each year we prepare for busy times by placing skip bins in high activity areas for, traditionally, the campers in our area,’’ he said.

“While we can’t wait to welcome all visitors to our area, the rubbish that can be left behind is unwelcome.”

Mr Sharp said the skips were only to be used for campers’ waste, not for residential waste.

“The skips will be closely monitored for any misuse.’’

Contractors will empty the bins regularly, but if full, people are asked not to leave rubbish on the ground, instead take it to a resource recovery centre where camping waste is accepted free of charge.

Mr Sharp said Victoria’s container deposit scheme was an added incentive to take camping waste off site.

Locals and visitors could access council’s resource recovery centres to dispose of various waste.
