Head to the beach today

Head down to McLean Beach this morning for the unveiling of commemorative signage which honours the centenary of the Learn to Swim program in Deniliquin, and its founder Hector McLean.

The 100th anniversary was in November last year, although plans to celebrate it were impeded by the floods.

The celebrations will be hosted by Edward River Council at McLean Beach from 11am.

Some seating will be made available, although it might be wise to throw one in your car in case they are all occupied by the time you arrive.

Those involved in the celebration also invite people to bring along a par-boiled potato wrapped in tin foil. Today’s cartoon from Lordy (on this page) might give you some idea as to why.

Guest speakers will include Mr McLean’s youngest daughter Ruth, who will make the trip from Griffith, and Bill Hetherington.

Also expected to be in attendance are three of Mr McLean’s grandchildren.

Give thanks to your midwife

Today is International Day of the Midwife, which is celebrated each year on May 5.

This is a chance for midwives to celebrate their profession and for all of us to recognise their work and contribution to maternal and newborn health.

In celebrating this special day Murrumbidgee Local Health District has thanked every midwife working across MLHD for their “ongoing commitment to high quality midwifery care and the dedication, skill and compassionate care you provide to women and their families”.

We at the PT add our voice to the chorus.

How apt for this day to be held so close to Mother’s Day.
