Shepparton residents awoke to a thick fog blanketing the region on Wednesday, June 21.

As the first major fog of winter descended on the city, police urged drivers to turn on their headlights when visibility was poor.

Shepparton Highway Patrol Acting Sergeant Richard Ivory warned that motorists in newer cars with automatic headlights may have to turn the lights on themselves.

“Automatic headlights don’t recognise fog. They only recognise darkness,” Sgt Ivory said.

“People may be required to manually turn their lights on.

“Police urge all motorists to have their headlights on for visibility.”

Sgt Ivory said having lights on in the fog applied whether in urban areas or out on open roads.

Drivers who do not have their lights on in the fog risk a $277 fine and one demerit point loss.
