Goulburn Murray Community Leadership’s Fairley Leadership Program participants have a proud history of producing outstanding community projects and now some recent graduates are planning their own legacy.

For Shepparton’s Meena Malla, Raj Basavaraju, and Cobram-Barooga’s Rachel McKay and Marissa Daly, it’s their turn to see a project come to fruition.

“We have seen too many of our community members adversely affected by cancer... our region is marked as high risk for cancer,” Ms Daly said.

“Our team want to raise awareness of cancer screening programs and the benefits of early diagnosis in the community.

“While we are at it, we thought we could raise a heap of money for a great cause.”

Amidst a whirlwind of potential ideas, the group have decided to host a dinner event in pursuit of aiding ‘Love Your Sister’, an Australian cancer charity.

They aim to raise $20,000 while increasing awareness of how and where Goulburn Valley residents can access preventative testing, treatment, and support.

It’s a cause the region knows all too well and a struggle that many community members share.

For this reason, it’s no surprise many are interested in contributing to the event’s success.

The group has secured a range of sponsors – Fairleys, Mitre 10, Lowes Petroleum, Joval Family Wines, and more – and received further support from the region’s service clubs, including Mooroopna Rotary Club.

They are seeking additional sponsors to make the event “even more special”, with items that can be auctioned or raffled off.

“We really appreciate any contribution, large or small, to this event,” Ms Daly said.

Awaiting community members on the night will be a three-course dinner along with live entertainment, raffles, auctions, prizes, and valuable health information.

With the details ironed out, all that’s left to do is fill those tables.

“We want it to be a fantastic night out, and we need our community to help make it happen,” Ms Daly said.
