Ross Brittain and Travis Hampshire have been recognised for their exceptional and dedicated service to Victoria Police.
The two men, who are no longer serving, were among four people honoured for their unwavering commitment to protecting their communities and upholding the values of the force.
Mr Brittain retired in 2021 as a senior sergeant and station commander at Shepparton Police Station after serving for 32 years.
However, his connection to the police stretches back much further.
Mr Brittain hails from a long line of police officers, including his father, grandfathers, and uncles. In 1989, he decided to follow in their footsteps and join the force.
During his long career, Mr Brittain was involved in many memorable cases.
One of the most notable was the apprehension of a serial rapist in Moonee Ponds.
Mr Brittain worked tirelessly as part of the plain clothes unit, conducting night-shift work and ultimately assisting in the man’s arrest.
As a police officer, Mr Brittain witnessed many fatalities, serious incidents and investigations, which made for an ever-changing and challenging job.
“There was never a dull moment,” he said.
He also reflected on how the image and respect for police officers had changed over the years but how his passion for the job never waned.
“It’s a really enjoyable career (and) you meet some fantastic people both internally and externally,” he said.
Mr Brittain left a legacy of dedication, professionalism and passion for his work when he retired.
After serving for more than three decades, he offered valuable advice to younger police, urging them to be motivated and “have a go” at what they do.
Mr Brittain emphasised that there were plenty of avenues to explore and enjoy within the police force.
However, he advised that staying motivated and making the most of your time was crucial because it flew by quickly.
Since retiring, Mr Brittain has been able to spend a significant amount of time with his family.
He has enjoyed the simple pleasures of family life and has taken a few short trips away.
Despite his retirement, the bond between his family and Victoria Police remains steadfast, as his son has decided to join the force.
Mr Brittain said he had made many fantastic connections with people throughout his career.
This was evident as, during the ceremony, he received a commendation from the Chief Commissioner of Police, highlighting his dedicated service.
Mr Hampshire, a sergeant who left Victoria Police in October 2020, had a fulfilling career after serving for more than 18 years.
Mr Hampshire brought with him a wealth of experience from his previous endeavours in nursing, community and youth work.
Reflecting on his time in the police force, Mr Hampshire said he had a great time despite the challenges that came with the job.
“The people you meet and particularly your work colleagues, I think they do a great job and I think they’re consistently undervalued by the broader community — I think they do a fantastic job,” he said.
After retiring from the force, Mr Hampshire pursued his long-time dream of owning his own pallet business.
“It’s something that I’ve always thought about doing,” he said.
Both officers exemplify the dedication and commitment required to serve as a police officers.
Their contributions to Victoria Police have left a lasting legacy and serve as an inspiration to younger officers.
The ceremony honouring these officers was a testament to the importance of their service and the gratitude they received from the community they served.
