Those who need it most will soon be able to access a new free laundry service.

Orange Sky, a not-for-profit organisation that helps support people doing it rough with free laundry facilities, has announced it will be partnering with the Greater Shepparton Lighthouse Project and St Alban’s Anglican Church to offer the essential service in Mooroopna.

Orange Sky co-founder and chief executive Lucas Patchett said the organisation was really proud and excited to help support the Shepparton community.

“Positively connecting communities is at the heart of everything we do, and it is no surprise that Aussies are doing it really tough right now, so it’s never been more important for Orange Sky to launch more services to help more communities in need, especially with the rise in cost of living and the current housing crisis,” he said.

“Working hand-in-hand with The Lighthouse Project, St Alban’s Anglican Church Mooroopna and the community, we are excited to launch an Orange Sky service to support our friends doing it tough in the region.”

A laundry pod will be coming to Family Haven in Mooroopna. The pod is a stand-alone structure fit with two washing machines and two dryers. It will be operated by a team of local volunteers, so people in need can access clean clothes.

Lighthouse executive officer Amy Robinson said she was excited about what the partnership with Orange Sky would bring to the community.

“At the Lighthouse, we are acutely aware of the growing issues facing our community, especially for those facing financial hardship, and those at risk of, or experiencing, homelessness,” she said.

“The ongoing cost-of-living crisis has significantly impacted many community members, making it difficult for them to meet the most basic needs — such as washing clothing and household laundry.

“We are delighted to join forces with Orange Sky to provide timely support.”

The Orange Sky laundry pod service is set to open on Tuesday, October 15, with members in the community who need support encouraged to go to Family Haven every Monday from 9am to 11am to have a yarn and their washing done at no cost.

Orange Sky will also be supporting families using the Family Haven centre from Tuesday to Thursday.

Locals who wish to volunteer their time to help the cause should email volunteer@orangesky.org.au to sign up.
