Road upgrade plea

In that order, Scott’s Transport’s Col Robinson said he has identified his business’ three biggest concerns.
He also believes all three could be vastly improved with the development of the proposed Kyabram Road Connection.
The Kyabram Road Connection calls for traffic to be diverted off the proposed Shepparton bypass along the Mid-land Hwy and onto the Echuca-Kyabram Rd.
With the region suffering from a bevy of pockmarked roads, unsafe intersections and growing traffic needs, Mr Robinson said to make his company competitive and for Kyabram to entice more business, vast road upgrades such as the connection had to be considered.

Lone Pine reflection
Solemn ceremonies were organised across Kyabram last week to commemorate the infamous battle of Lone Pine in World War I.
That battle from August 6 to August 9, 1915 was one of the hardest fought actions in the Gallipoli campaign, with 2277 Australian soldiers killed or wounded.
Ceremonies at Kyabram P-12 College, St Augustine’s College and Kyabram Hospital occurred beneath lone trees planted in recognition of fallen soldiers, those who served and families affected by their involvement in World War I.
The tree was grown from seeds Australian soldiers collected form a single pine tree that grew on the site at the Turkish war ground.

Postcard petition Parliament bound
Representatives from the Neighbourhood House Cluster met with Member for Rodney Paul Weller last Friday to discuss increased funding and support for some of the regions suffering neighbourhood houses.
The cluster, made up of Kyabram, Girgarre, Tongala, Lockington, Echuca, Crossenvale, Rochester and Rushworth Neighbourhood houses, have started a postcard petition campaign.
“We are seeking an increase in funding for their 15 community house networks in Victoria, in particular we want to address those houses that are really underfunded,” Girgarre Community Cottage and Neighbourhood House Cluster coordinator Jen Savage said.
The postcard petition enables residents from across the community to sign their name to a postcard on which the aims of the Neighbourhood House Cluster are written.
Mr Weller will then present the postcards to Victorian Parliament on October 13.

Graham’s the top tipster
Graham Campbell’s love of Essendon has clinched him the $500 account in North Central Securities Ltd (formerly Kyabram Housing Investments Ltd) and Free Press AFL footy tipping award.
While Essendon had a poor year, Graham stuck with them and last Saturday he was awarded when they upset Carlton.
It gave him six winners for the round and enabled him to hold onto get the big prize from Ebony Keenan-Dunn who stormed home with seven winners to fail by one point to catch Graham.
Graham said he studied the form of the teams each week and took injuries into account when making his selections.
Shepp or Campaspe?
Kyabram people have their opportunity on Monday night to say which municipality they should be in under the municipal restructure.
The Mayor of Kyabram, Cr John Elborough, said the Town Council had decided to call a public meeting at the Plaza Theatre at 7.30pm.
The Local Government Board’s recommendation announced at Euroa on Monday were for Kyabram to be included in the City of Grater Shepparton.
Cr Elborough said the options of Kyabram were:
- To remain in the proposed new municipality of City of Greater Shepparton, along with Shepparton City and Shire, Rodney Shire and small parts of the Shires of Euroa, Violet Town and Tungamah.
- To seek to be included in the new Municipality of Campaspe, which take in Echuca City, Deakin and Rochester and Waranga Shires, apart from Murchison and small parts of Deakin.

Hallam impressed with Kyabram visit
Minister for Local Government Roger Hallam visited the area last week to examine regional development.
While in the area, the group visited Tongala’s Golden Cow Complex, Greenham and Sons abattoir, Containers Packaging in Kyabram and the Kyabram Fauna Park.
Mr Hallam and the committee were pleased with the way local enterprise was moving forward.

$18,000 street sweeper gets the ‘Green Light’
Kyabram’s streets will be machine swept in the near future following the Town Council’s decision on Tuesday night to go ahead with the purchase of a mechanical sweeper.
Several councillors and the engineers had inspected the machine sweepers at Cohuna and Camberwell prior to the decision being made.
The meeting decided to purchase a Wayne model 993 for the sum of $18,000, the same used by Camberwell City Council.
Cr K. King said this was the greatest advance Council had made in upgrading the appearance of the town.
He said ratepayers were entitled to have their streets maintained properly, and he hoped that this would not only be an efficient means of going it but, in the long run, more economic.

A Grand Old Lady
A grand old lady with an alert mind and a quick sense of humour celebrated her 98th birthday on Monday afternoon, September 9 with a gathering of family and friends.
She is Mrs Christina Beatrice Nankivell of Fenaughty St, Kyabram.
Five generations were present at the birthday celebration, and Mrs Nanikivell was the recipient of numerous gifts, cards, flowers and congratulations.
When asked the secret of her longevity, she smiled and said, “Plenty of hard work, and I never worry.”

Drainage Plans Are Submitted
Plans have been prepared for two schemes which it is hoped will relieve Kyabram’s flood susceptibility.
The plans were tabled at Tuesday night’s meeting of Kyabram Town Council by the Municipal Engineer, Mr C. L. Godfrey.
The first was for the duplication of the drainage rising main.
The second plan submitted to Council was for a drain from the lake to McEwen Rd.
Although the actual route has not yet been decided, a preliminary estimate of the proposal is $26,000 for an open earth drain and a further $36,000 for a concrete line.
