From familiar to the unknown

Transitioning to high school can be an exciting time full of new experiences.

On Tuesday Deniliquin South School Year 6 students and St Michael’s School Year 6 students enjoyed a half day transition program at Deniliquin High School.

Edward Public School, North Public School and the small schools had their turn yesterday.

For these students high school means a move from the familiar to the unknown, and a whole new way of doing things.

Transitions are moments in life which involve moving from one stage to another and dealing with the changes that come with them.

The South students walked to the high school for a noon start.

Their lunch break was at 12.40pm and they could either bring a packed lunch or money for the canteen.

The students also participated in lessons that included science experiments, a scavenger hunt around the school, PE, English and a visit to the school library and ag plot.

Young people who experience a successful transition into their new school are more likely to feel valued and accepted.

They tend to have a more positive attitude to learning and talk to you about any issues that arise.

Marita Leetham is the 2024 year advisor for Deniliquin High School and was responsible for organising the day.

The students will all have another opportunity to visit the high school for a full transition day early next term.
