Echuca Village Fire Brigade members will be battling blazes in a new tanker after receiving a Volunteer Emergency Services Equipment Program grant.
The VESEP provides annual funding to successful Victorian emergency services volunteer groups to purchase equipment, vehicles and appliances or to carry out minor facility improvements.
Echuca Village was one of 17 CFA and VICSES stations across the Mallee Loddon region to receive a grant.
In total, Echuca Village CFA will receive $288,333 through the grant, which will be added to $36,667 of the brigade’s own funds to put towards the purchase of a new fire truck.
Brigade captain Darrell Phillips said it was exciting news and that the new tanker would be beneficial to the community.
“We’re really excited about it, it’s going to be great for Echuca and the surrounding communities,” he said.
“If our truck goes away on a strike team or to other parts of the state or to NSW, we’ll have a second truck to look after our community and neighbouring communities.”
The new tanker is expected to hold 2000 litres and a crew of four members.
Echuca-Moama Search and Rescue will receive $84,038 for upgrades to its office communication facility.
In nearby areas, Rochester SES is set to receive $96,472.98 to put towards a four-wheel drive vehicle replacement.
At Bamawm Extension, the CFA will receive $80,000 for minor facility improvements.
Gunbower Fire Brigade has been given $20,000 to upgrade its facility.
A total of 268 projects throughout Victoria are set to receive a share in more than $15 million as part of the 2024-25 program.
Victorian Emergency Services Minister Jaclyn Symes congratulated all recipients of the grants and emphasised the program’s importance.
“Congratulations to all the deserving volunteer groups in receiving grants,” she said.
“The Volunteer Emergency Services Equipment Program is an important annual program providing a critical boost to local volunteers, ensuring their equipment and facilities are up to date.”
The purchase of the Echuca Village new light tanker will take place at a date yet to be confirmed.
With a new tanker on the horizon, the brigade is looking for more volunteers to join its ranks.
