Yarnbombers brighten Benalla’s winter

Benalla CBD is looking bright and colourful thanks to the hard work of Benalla’s Yarnbombers - who have included a tribute to some important community members.

A group of 15 volunteers spent around six hours installing fun woollen characters and designs on Saturday and Sunday, July 29 and 30.

As always, it features characters on bollards for the kids to enjoy as well as some vibrantly decorated trees, posts and pergolas.

Group president Joy Shirley said volunteers had many compliments while putting it up.

“We have lots of new items on Bridge St, and a tribute to our first responders and emergency services on the corner of Bridge and Carrier (Sts),” Ms Shirley said.

“We have a Paramedic, Police and SES, for example. We’ve also put some new animals up.

“People might see the frog, that was given to us last year after we had some items stolen.”

Ms Shirley said this year has been the best so far and the group wanted to say thank you for all the support.

“Several shops around town have put yarn in their windows. Bertallis, Red B4 Bookshop and both of the florists have something.

“Thank you to treasure hunters who have supported us with various materials.

“And Council has also given us a grant this year. It’s all meant we can do more.

“We’re free to get the materials we need to get them ready, and we didn’t have to borrow old safety vests. We have new vests this year.

“But most of all we’d like to thank the community for their support and gratitude.”
