Once upon a time, school students dressed up so grand, for it was Book Week, you see, that took over Kyabram-land.

Students across Australia embraced the magic of Book Week from August 17 to 23, bringing beloved characters to life through creative costumes and engaging in a variety of book-inspired activities.

On Friday, August 23, St Augustine’s College foundation to Year 4 students gathered in the Brigidine Centre for a Book Character Parade.

The parade saw princesses, minions, football players and witches take turns marching in front of their peers, making sure to high-five them as they made their way around.

The stand-outs were Memphis Brook, who had a hyperrealistic costume of Carol from the picture book Where The Wild Things Are and Louie Ciavarella who wowed everyone in his cardboard monster truck costume.

Kyabram P-12 College kicked off its week-long (week late) Book Week celebrations called BOOKTACULAR, beginning with a parade of characters.

On Monday, August 26, primary students made their way around their friends, parading their costumes, and flaunting in front of staff and family members.

The dynamic mother-daughter librarian team, Meg and Jen Sargant, curated an exciting array of activities for students of all ages, including captivating magic shows, inspiring author sessions, a bustling scholastic book fair, and engaging competitions with enticing prizes.

Kyabram’s Teen Challenge also got in on the Book Week fun, holding its own Extravaganza Week from Monday, August 26, to Friday, August 30.

Business manager Amy Bradbury said they decided to hold the Book Week Extravaganza so that Teen Challenge could immerse themselves in the community even further.

From August 26 to August 30 Thrift Store hosted various activities, each day bringing a new set of fun including a colouring competition, a raffle, a book scavenger hunt, a lucky dip and the main event, a pancake afternoon tea on Thursday, August 29.

Students finishing school, window shoppers, and even those just passing by got a free pancake with their choice of topping — a nice way to begin a Thursday afternoon.

To recap the week’s nuptials, Free Press journalist Jemma Jones has Book Week events from across Kyabram.
